About the tour
Gatun Lake is the reservoir created by the Panama Canal and hosts a number of natural adventures. Choose which tour suits your spirit of adventure.
All tours pick you up from your hotel in Panama City and return you there the same day.
Option 1: Boat Ride to Monkey Island
The tour bus will take you to the embarkation pier of Gatun Lake. This artificial lake for some time was the largest constructed lake in the world and has over time adapted to its natural environment to become a haven for plant and animal habitat.
A boat will take you out on the lake to get views you can only see from the water of the beautiful Gamboa area, surrounded by the famous Gamboa Rainforest Reserve.
The next stop is the exciting highlight of the tour, which is a visit to Isla de los Monos, or Monkey Island. You’ll encounter capuchin and titi monkeys quite easily, and the howler monkeys who are more bashful, will at least greet you with their calls from deeper within the island.
Total trip time: 3 hours. Departures daily at 6:45 a.m.
Included are hotel pick-up and drop-off, all transportation, and an English-speaking guide.
Option 2: Kayaking and Horse Riding
This longer-day tour focuses on getting out into the jungle for closer encounters. Once we arrive at Gatun Lake, we guide you on horseback for a 45-minute ride through the dense tropical jungle. You will get incredible and ancient views of the uninhabited part of the forest and see the lake from a commanding viewpoint.
After the horseback ride, you’ll transfer into kayaks for another hour of winding your way around the shores and tributaries of this fascinating lake. You’ll likely come into contact with turtles, sloths, parrots, toucans, or howler monkeys.
Total trip time: 5 hours. Departures daily at 7:30 a.m.
Included are hotel pick up and drop off, transport to and from Lake Gatun, an English-speaking guide, kayaking equipment, a horse riding tour, and a snack.
